I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t writing.
It started with me doing ridiculously bad comics (art and drawing has never been one of my God-Blessed talents…I just didn’t realize that until later) on my bedroom floor about forest animals and their adventures. I loved to read about animals, and as such, writing about them was my first foray into the written word.
From there, as I grew up, the stories grew up; forlorn orphans replaced forest animals, words replaced lopsided comics, and I became to dream of seeing my name in print.
I developed new hobbies as I came into my teens. I found a love for teas, I developed a natural passion for photography, needlework enthralled me, I stumbled, somewhat awkwardly, into blogging and I discovered that reading books was more than an outlet for escape; if I reviewed books for publishers and authors, I would get free books more often then not.
For a dirt-poor teenager with nothing but time on her hands and nothing else to do but devour books like the starved bibliophile she was, reviewing books in exchange for books was a dream.
I learned a lot during my time reviewing for Scholastic, Waterbrook-Multnomah and other publishers. But it didn’t last. I got a job, and that became my focus. From that job, it was another job and another. I managed (I’m still not sure how) to snag an entry-level journalism job at a local newspaper when I was 19, and now, at 22, I am falling every the more in love with journalism. It won’t ever replace my delight at writing fictional words, but I am getting paid to write and that is enough. for now.
In my spare time, I still read and review books, but no longer for publishers. I read and review for myself. I enjoy needlework a lot, especially quilting and cross stitching; In fact, my family has an upcoming business, http://www.fieldandflock.com, where I will help manage the online presence and supply certain needle pieces.
So, why did I bring this blog, which is the first time I have changed my blog location since I began blogging, into being?
I’m ready for a new chapter in my life. I recently reevaluated what was important to me, and decided that writing, reading, photography and my hobbies were. Yes, my job is still near the top of the list, but I can’t let my job take away from the joy of the things I have loved for so long.
So I decided it was time to close up shop at the blog location of my childhood, turn over a new leaf and settle into a new online home, here.
Here at Wild Strawberries, you’ll find snippets of my life, my doings, my beings; as well as bits and pieces of writing, a handful of book reviews and, hopefully, a thriving portfolio of photography.
Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you enjoy your stay!
Some Basic Facts About Me:
1 – I am a born again Christian with unorthodox views. I do not attend a brick and mortar church (I am convicted against them). I do not celebrate most ‘Christian’ holidays. I do not ‘fit in’ with either side of the church-warring side. But this is what I am and who I am and what I am called to be. And I am at peace with that.
2 – I’m a born and raised Floridian. That being said, the beach is NOT one of my favorite places in the world. I have an….aversion to being in salt water. That being said, I do enjoy shell hunting and falling asleep to waves (which doesn’t actually happen a lot because I live AT LEAST a good hour from the beach).
3 – My parents somehow have managed to build and raise 10 kids (+ one in Heaven). I’m the oldest of my 9 siblings. We were all homeschooled. We got lots of “are ya’ll the next Duggar Family?” and “You must be Catholic!” To that, the answer is a DEFINITE no and another no.
4 – I absolutely love animals. Like, seriously I love animals more than people sometimes. Currently, I have a full-of-attitude Chiweenie (Chihuahua + Dachshund aka ‘weenie’ mix) and a 2 1/2 foot long Ball Python named Monty “Pep” Python.
5 – As stated above, I work full time as a journalist for a local publisher which prints two newspapers a week. I love the work. It’s exhausting and has the tendency to steal my weekend away from me…but I love it all the same.
